WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are small files installed in a computer hard drive or browser, tablet, smartphone or equivalent device. They have browsing capabilities through the Internet and contribute, among other things, to: personalize the services offered by a web owner, to improve navigation and usability experience, to gather aggregate information from the website’s visitors, to enable the reproduction and display of multimedia content found on the website, to allow for interactivity between the user and website, to enable security tools, etc.

  • Web usability: It can be defined as the user’s experience while browsing, using and interacting with a website.
  • Aggregate information: It is anonymous, usually numerical information collected for statistical purposes.
  • Terminal equipment: Device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) the user employs to browse the Internet.
  • Editor: Owner or entity in charge of the webpage.
  • Third party: External, collaborating, service provider entity or editor-related party, involved in the management of some cookies.
  • Responsible for the cookie: editor, entity in charge, webpage owner or, even, a third party in some cases.
  • Browsing habits: Trend data observed in the user while surfing a webpage, such as the time spent on the page, areas visited, most visited sections, origin of the visit, and purpose, among other things.

WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES DO WE USE?

Based on the managing entity:

  • Our own cookies: Cookies sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain managed by the editor, which provides the service requested by the user.
  • Third party cookies: Cookies sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain not managed by the editor but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

Based on the amount of time they remain activated on the terminal equipment:

  • Session cookies: A kind of cookie designed to gather and store data while the user is visiting a website.
  • Persistent cookies: Cookies that store data on the device and may be accessed and used for a period defined by the party responsible for the cookie, which can vary from some minutes to several years.

Based on the purpose of the data obtained though the cookies:

  • Technical cookies: Cookies that enable the user to browse a website, platform or application and use several options or services thereon, such as to control traffic and data communication, identify the session, access restricted areas, remember items on an order, complete purchases from an order, fill out a registration application or request to participate in an event, use security items while browsing, store content to disseminate video or sound files and share content over social networks.
  • Personalization cookies: Cookies that enable the user to access the service with certain general predefined features on the user’s device based on a series of criteria, such as language, browser used to access the service, regional setup from where the service is accessed, etc.
  • Analytical cookies: Cookies that enable their owners to track and analyze the behavior of their website’s users. The information they gather through this type of cookie is used to measure the activity of the websites, application or platform and to create browsing profiles for the website, application or platform users in order to make improvements considering the analysis of users’ usage data.

IN SHORT, WHAT COOKIES DO WE USE?

We use the following cookies:

  • _utma, _utmc, _utmz, _utmb: Google Analytics cookies with web analysis functions. The data gathered is completely anonymous; it does not allow for the identification of visitors. You can find more information about Google Analytics cookies, here.
  • _utma: Used to distinguish users and sessions. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is executed and there is no __utma cookie found. The cookie is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics. This cookie expires in 2 years.
  • _utmc: It is not used in ga.js. It is to interact with urchin.js. Historically, this cookie was used along with __utmb cookie to determine whether the user was in a new session/visit. It is a session cookie.
  • utmb: Used to determine new sessions or visits. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library executes and there is no existing __utmb cookie. The cookie is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics. As a session cookie, it is automatically deleted when sites are switched or the browser is closed.
  • _utmz: Stores the source of traffic or campaign that explains how the user reached the site. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library executes and is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics. This cookie expires in 6 months.
  • cookie-agreed-es:Cookie used to store information about whether the user has closed the message or inferior informative banner about the use of cookies in the webpage, by clicking on the ‘I accept’ button. This cookie expires in 1 year. It does not allow for user identification (anonymous cookie).
  • has.js: Cookie used to know if the user’s browser supports JavaScript. It is a session cookie.

HOW TO DISABLE COOKIES?

Blocking or disabling all cookies helps protect privacy, but may also limit the navigation experience on certain websites, as well as some functionality, or even not allowing the proper browsing or use of some of its services.
